BRAINCAPTAINS: The Neurophysiological Architecture of Leadership in Elite Team Sports and Its Modulation Through Targeted Neurotechnology

Leadership in elite team sports has traditionally been conceptualized as a psychological or personality-based construct. The present exploratory clinical study proposes an alternative framework, conceptualizing leadership as a measurable and trainable neurophysiological configuration. The BRAINCAPTAINS project investigated whether formally recognized team leaders exhibit a distinct profile of prefrontal cortical efficiency, autonomic regulation, and collective synchronization compared to non-leader athletes. Forty elite players (20 leaders and 20 non-leaders) underwent quantitative EEG assessment focused on Brodmann areas 10 and 46, comprehensive heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, heart–brain coherence measurement, and validated leadership evaluations. Results indicated that leaders demonstrated significantly higher sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) activity, lower high-beta activation, elevated vagal tone (RMSSD), and greater heart–brain coherence. Furthermore, leaders showed increased interindividual EEG coherence and HRV synchronization within the team context, suggesting enhanced capacity for collective neurophysiological alignment. Leadership scores from both self-report and staff evaluation correlated with these neural and autonomic markers. A structured two-week multimodal intervention protocol—including EEG neurofeedback, transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation, heart–brain coherence training, binaural stimulation, and photobiomodulation—was implemented to examine the modifiability of this profile. Findings support the hypothesis that effective leadership in elite sport reflects an integrated cortical–autonomic regulatory architecture that can be objectively measured and potentially optimized. These results provide a foundation for neurophysiologically informed talent identification and leadership development strategies in high-performance sport.
