Psychological well-being (PWB) represents a multidimensional construct central to theoretical debates within positive psychology and mental health research. This review critically examines dominant perspectives on PWB, with particular emphasis on the distinction between hedonic and eudemonic traditions. Key theoretical frameworks, including Ryff’s model of psychological well-being and Self-Determination Theory, are analysed to elucidate core dimensions of optimal functioning. The review also addresses theoretical ambiguities, measurement challenges, and cultural and developmental considerations that complicate the conceptualization of PWB. By synthesizing diverse theoretical perspectives, the paper highlights conceptual gaps and proposes directions for advancing theory-driven research in psychological well-being.
