Abstract

This study determined the pedagogical skills of elementary Music Teachers in Gubat, Sorsogon, for the school year 2017-2018. Respondents were 60 Elementary Music Teachers from Gubat District. The descriptive method of research was used in this study. To gather the necessary data, the researcher used a survey questionnaire to determine the pedagogical skills of elementary teachers teaching Music, the teaching difficulties of Music teachers in rhythm, melody, and form, and the preferred approaches of elementary music teachers. The data were analyzed and interpreted using frequency count and ranking. This study revealed that most teachers in Gubat District exercise the skills of selecting appropriate methods, techniques, approaches, procedures, teaching aids, and evaluation in teaching a song, selecting songs suitable for particular grade levels, and integrating music into other subjects. Thus, the Kodaly Method, which involves composing simple songs and jingles and playing musical instruments, is seldom employed by teachers. The extent of difficulties faced by elementary Music teachers in rhythm, melody, and form was, on average, difficult. The average ratings for rhythm, melody, and form are 3.5, 3.8, and 3.9, respectively, which are in the descriptive category of 'difficult'. Most music teachers in Gubat District prefer collaborative, learner-centered, and interactive approaches in teaching, which are effective in the music subject. Teacher-centered and teacher-dominated approaches are not the primary concern of teachers, and they are a traditional approach. These imply that teachers teaching Music have difficulties in teaching Music and are not knowledgeable and skillful enough to handle the Music subject. There were proposed measures based on the study. Instructional materials to enhance the teaching performance of the teachers in Music were developed. Based on the findings and conclusions drawn, it was recommended that: (1)the school administrators may design a seminar workshop about developing pedagogical skills by the Music teachers in Gubat District especially to those newly hired teachers, (2)the Elementary Music Teachers of Gubat District may attend regular trainings and seminars about different preferred pedagogical approaches that is useful in teaching Music, (3)enough time be allotted to the Elementary Music teachers during INSET training and seminars about Music instruction to lessen the difficulties of teaching Music along rhythm, melody and form, (4)the developed instructional materials in teaching Music be utilized and (5)Future researches on other aspects of Music such as teaching difficulties of Music Teachers in relation to the low performance of the pupils in Music subject be conducted in other schools or districts to strengthen this study further.
