Water leakage in distribution systems leads to significant resource loss, highlighting the need for intelligent, low-latency monitoring and leak detection solutions. This paper proposes an edge-intelligent Internet of Things (IoT)–based system for smart water usage monitoring and real-time leak detection. The system performs local edge-level analysis of water flow data using a sliding time-window approach combined with threshold-based decision logic to accurately distinguish between normal consumption and leak conditions. By processing data at the edge, the proposed method reduces detection latency, minimizes network dependency, and limits false leak alarms caused by short-term flow fluctuations. The analyzed results are transmitted to an IoT cloud platform for real-time visualization and automated alert generation. Simulation results demonstrate reliable leak detection performance with low computational overhead, making the system suitable for deployment on resource-constrained edge devices. The proposed framework offers a scalable, efficient, and practical solution for smart water management in residential, commercial, and smart city applications.
