Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive architectural and empirical study of high-availability API gateway design using Kong in distributed multi-cloud environments. Motivated by the increasing operational complexity of cloud-native microservice architectures, we examine Kong’s role as a scalable control point capable of enforcing routing, security, and resilience policies across heterogeneous infrastructures. Using a production-inspired deployment consisting of a multi-region Kong cluster orchestrated through Kubernetes and operating across AWS and Azure to manage more than 50 microservices, we analyze fault-tolerant configuration patterns, auto-scaling behaviors, cross-cloud synchronization mechanisms, and sub-second failover performance. The study introduces two novel contributions: (1) a cost optimization framework for multi-cloud Kong deployments based on dynamic resource allocation, cloud-specific pricing models, and traffic-aware scaling, yielding cost reductions of up to 40%; and (2) an enhanced security architecture that integrates Kong with service mesh technologies, improving policy consistency and reducing attack surface exposure.
