Abstract
Background:
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital anomaly in neonates. Early diagnosis is critical, as a significant proportion of cases require urgent intervention. Clinical assessment alone is often inadequate in neonates.
Purpose:
To evaluate the spectrum of congenital heart diseases in neonates using two-dimensional echocardiography with Doppler in a rural tertiary care setting.
Materials and Methods:
This observational study included 112 neonates aged 0–30 days diagnosed with CHD using 2D echocardiography with Doppler. Premature neonates with isolated patent ductus arteriosus and acquired cardiac diseases were excluded. Segmental echocardiographic analysis was performed.
Results:
Acyanotic CHD constituted 87.5% of cases, while cyanotic CHD accounted for 12.5%. Ventricular septal defect (59%) was the most common acyanotic lesion. Tetralogy of Fallot (50%) was the most common cyanotic CHD.
Conclusion:
Acyanotic septal defects form the majority of neonatal CHDs. Early echocardiography is essential for timely diagnosis and referral, especially in rural healthcare settings.
