Abstract
Background: Osteoarthritis of the knee was a degenerative, non-inflammatory joint disease characterised by destruction of articular cartilage and formation of new bone at the joint surfaces and margins. It was a major cause of disability, particularly in the elderly population. Approximately 28.7% of the elderly population was affected by knee osteoarthritis (OA). Knee OA often causes pain and disability, leading to functional limitations and a reduced quality of life. Various physiotherapy interventions such as electrotherapeutic modalities, stretching, muscle energy technique, and manual therapy techniques like Maitland and Mulligan mobilisation were commonly used.
Objective: The study aimed to determine which technique offered a better outcome in terms of pain and active knee pain-free range of motion.
Methodology: In this comparative study, 30 participants with unilateral osteoarthritis of the knee were selected and randomly allocated into two groups. Group A received the McKenzie Technique along with interferential therapy, and Group B received the Muscle Energy Technique along with interferential therapy. Pre- and post-treatment outcomes were measured using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and goniometric assessment of active knee pain-free range of motion.
Result: The study demonstrated that both the McKenzie Technique and the Muscle Energy Technique were effective in reducing pain and improving knee flexion range of motion in participants with knee osteoarthritis. Within-group analysis showed statistically significant improvements with both interventions; however, no significant difference was found between the two groups.
