This research work represents an analysis of the informal economy in Jaleswar Town of Balasore district of Odisha. This research work examines the economic vulnerability and sustainability of informal street vendors by using the concept of umbra and penumbra. This research work is based upon the surveyed data collected from different categories of street vendors in Jaleswar Town and analyses operational cost, profit structure and a stress-strain based economic vulnerability to evaluate the livelihood stability. Here, the umbra represents the dark area of informal economy where vendors are highly vulnerable. These vendors are characterized by low economic adaptive capacity, and unstable income conditions, while the penumbra represents semi stable zone, where low vulnerable vendor groups exist. These vendors have higher economic adaptive capacity and greater economic flexibility.
The analysis of this research work reveals significant differences in the profitability and economic sustainability across different types of vendor groups. This indicates informal economy in Jaleswar Town is showing heterogeneous pattern rather than uniform pattern. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of the dual nature of the informal economy and offers policy-relevant insights for sustainable urban development in small Indian towns like Jaleswar.
