Biotechnological Approaches in Soybean (Glycine max L.) Improvement: Advances, Challenges and Future Prospects
Soybean, Biotechnology, Genetic engineering, Tissue culture, CRISPR/Cas9, Oilseed crops
Soybean (Glycine max L.) is a globally important oilseed and legume crop, valued for its high oil and protein content. Conventional breeding methods have contributed significantly to soybean improvement; however, progress is often limited by narrow genetic variability, long breeding cycles, and environmental constraints. Recent advances in biotechnology have opened new avenues for soybean crop improvement through plant tissue culture, genetic engineering, molecular breeding, and genome editing technologies. These approaches have enabled the development of high-yielding, stress-tolerant, pest-resistant, and nutritionally improved soybean varieties. This review highlights major biotechnological strategies applied in soybean improvement, focusing on tissue culture techniques, transgenic technology, marker-assisted selection, CRISPR/Cas-based genome editing, and future prospects for sustainable soybean production.
