Background: Senile cataract is an age related, vision impairing disease characterized by gradual, progressive thickening of the lens. It is one of the world’s leading causes of avoidable blindness (2). All techniques of cataract extraction are being modified to achieve best uncorrected visual acuity and early rehabilitation.
Objective: To study intraoperative and early post operative complication in patients undergoing Phacoemulsification and MSICS
Methodology: The patients will be divided in two groups of which Group A will include eyes operated by phacoemulsification, Group B will include eyes operated by manual SICS. Intraoperative complication will be noted. They will be followed up on 1st week, 2nd week and 6th week post operatively.
Results: Total of 100 patients were taken into this study in which 40 (40%) were male patients &60(600%)were female. In91(91.81%) patients underwent SICS surgery and the remaining 9(8.18%)patients underwent Phacoemulsification, Preoperatively, 70% had severely impaired vision (equal to or below 6/60), but postoperatively, a majority achieved good visual acuity (6/18 or better)in phacoemulsification. Complication in cataract surgery included corneal edema, which was the most common complication, affected 29 individuals.
Conclusion: Phacoemulsification and SICS are safe and equally efficacious procedures with low complication rates and excellent visual outcomes. MSICS can thus be an alternative to phacoemulsification wherever the requisite equipment and expertise are not available..
