Abstract

The project, entitled “Enhancement of Permanently Shadowed Regions of Lunar Craters,” aims to enhance the analytical capability of those regions of the moon which never receive sunlight by enhancing images from satellites to reveal hidden geological features. Using high-resolution data from the LROC (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera), the technique includes several different advanced image processing methods, including Canny Edge Detection and Gabor filters, which can be used for feature extraction; adaptive histogram equalization to emphasize contrast in poorly illuminated areas; and a method known as Local Binary Patterns, which can analyze textures for subtle variations in terrain that could indicate the presence of water ice or other compositions of minerals. With this robust approach, essential surface features within PSRs can be automatically identified and mapped, providing enhanced images critical to planning future lunar exploration and resource utilization missions and informing planetary science for further space technology and remote-sensing development.
