Abstract

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a drought-adaptive oilseed crop valued for high-quality edible and industrial oils. Despite its agronomic value and diverse usage, conventional breeding has plateaued in improving key traits like oil yield and stress resilience. Biotechnological advances like tissue culture, molecular genetics, transformation, and genomics-offer transformative potential to enhance safflower productivity and oil quality. This review synthesizes the current biotechnological landscape, discusses inherent challenges, evaluates case studies of progress, and outlines future directions for Carthamus tinctorius improvement.
