The Chromatic Narrative A Comparative Analysis of Color Theory and Moral Archetypes in Animation

Animators use a very sophisticated way of telling stories that doesn't rely on words. It's based on psychological and biological triggers, when creating characters. The research paper "The Chromatic Narrative" takes a look at the use of color theory to define two fundamental moral archetypes: the hero and the villain. Well-known as a foundational case study, Pixar's Inside Out (2015) is analyzed in this paper to understand the effects that high-luminance yellows and low-energy blues can have on the feelings of the viewer.
The paper, in its comparative analysis of primary and secondary colors argues that "clean", primary colors are traditionally for heroes and are considered pure, but that complicated secondary and acidic colours like lime green and dark purple are used to show something that’s not right, like toxicity or cruelty. Beyond the classic ideas of good and evil, this study also delves into "chromatic subversion", where designers sometimes get a character’s color palette completely wrong on purpose to add surprise to the story.
The methods used here combine knowledge of how our brains perceive colours with the study of visual symbols in movies and have led the researchers to believe that colour is a secret map for the viewer, a universal language that we can all understand, even if we don’t speak the same language.
