The growing interest in nutraceuticals for companion animals has prompted the exploration of plant-based supplements that offer health benefits beyond basic nutrition. The present study evaluates the nutraceutical potential of locally available grass (Cynodon dactylon) by analyzing its phytochemical composition, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, and macronutrient profile. A comparative assessment was conducted with bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), two herbs widely recognized for their medicinal properties. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts were prepared and analyzed for total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Staphylococcus aureus, and macronutrient composition. Results demonstrated that C. dactylon possesses measurable antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, with ethanolic extracts showing superior efficacy compared to aqueous extracts. Although bay leaf exhibited the highest overall bioactivity, grass showed promising nutraceutical properties combined with advantages of availability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. These findings suggest that grass may serve as a potential natural nutraceutical ingredient for pet health, warranting further in vivo and formulation-based studies.
