Abstract

Post traumatic anosmia—the complete or partial forfeiture of olfactory perception in the aftermath of cranial injury—stands as a frequently overlooked yet profoundly debilitating aftermath of traumatic brain injury (TBI). This sensory void can exact a severe toll on a patient’s quality of life, subtly undermining appetite, jeopardizing safety, and casting a pall over psychological well being. This exposition delves into the incidence, pathophysiological underpinnings, clinical evaluation, diagnostic modalities, and therapeutic avenues pertaining to post traumatic anosmia. Thanks to recent strides in imaging and neuro-rehabilitative techniques, our capacity to detect and manage this condition has assumed a refined sophistication. This review underscores the imperative for heightened awareness and routine olfactory screening in all individuals who sustain head trauma—irrespective of injury gravity—and delineates a multidisciplinary framework for delivering the most comprehensive and compassionate patient care.
