Abstract

The analysis of paint fragments such as paint chips obtained from vehicles involved in accidents is critical for forensic analysis. Since the organic pigments of the coating of vehicles are present in minor quantities, it becomes difficult to distinguish between the paint samples in automotive paint analysis. Hence, there is a need to integrate DART – MS in the analysis of paint samples. DART – MS is a growing analytical technique widely used for analysis of trace evidence. It enables faster analysis of paint samples; it is more efficient and less invasive compared to other analytical techniques. It is used to analyse solid, liquid and gaseous samples under an ambient environment. DART – MS also uses minimal samples for analysis, hence more preservation of sample. It helps with the analysis of samples at atmospheric pressure and allows for effective chemical analysis with minimal sample preparation. This review article deals with analysis of the application of DART – MS in paint analysis, instrumentation and working of the analytical technique, limitations associated with it and future perspective of DART - MS.
