This article provides an extensive and systematic literature review of the existing research on microfinance as studied by scholars and policymakers. Microfinance is always an interesting phenomenon for global research. This paper reviews existing quality microfinance literature from ABDC “A*” category in order to map out the major streams of research and identify widely used paper, highest cited papers & authorsand themes. To do this, the authors have reviewed 103 articles from academic journals. This paper highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches that transcend boundaries. The development and adoption of different theoretical frameworks, the use of multi-level methods, and the consideration of unexplored country contexts are among the authors’ recommendations for future research.
