Underweights and Overweight Among Rural School Children in Puducherry

Abstract Introduction: Malnutrition remains a significant public health challenge in India, particularly among children in rural areas. Malnutrition, encompassing both undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. Rural regions, due to socio-economic constraints, limited access to nutritious food, and inadequate health services, are disproportionately affected by malnutrition. Objective: To determine the BMI based on the category of student, underweight and overweight among rural school children in Puducherry. Study Design: This study was cross-sectional design to evaluate the nutritional status of rural school children in Puducherry. The study will include school children aged 6-12 years. A sample size of 286 children will be selected using stratified random sampling. Results: Among the study population 286 average age of participants is 14 years, The 215 (75%) of them male were the 71 (25%) of them female participated. Underweight Category (BMI <18) Study population 80 Approximately 27% of the population is underweight, indicating that more than a quarter of the individuals have a BMI less than 18. Normal Weight Category (BMI 18-25) Around 73 About 25.5% of the population falls within the normal weight range. Overweight and Obesity Category (BMI >25) 136 Nearly half (47.5%) of the population is either overweight. Conclusion: Overweight and Obese Individuals: Interventions Implement community-based programs focusing on healthy eating, physical activity, and weight management. Underweight Individuals: Nutritional Support Provide nutritional education. The data indicates significant health challenges within the population, with almost half being overweight or obese, and a notable portion being underweight.
