The utilization of herbal remedies for oral hygiene dates back centuries, with betel leaf and nutmeg being prominent constituents in traditional medicine. This review aims to synthesize existing literature on the antimicrobial properties of betel leaf and nutmeg and their potential application in herbal mouthwash formulations. Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) and nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.) possess bioactive compounds with documented antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens. Betel leaf extracts have demonstrated antibacterial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans, a key contributor to dental caries, while nutmeg extracts exhibit antifungal properties against Candida albicans, implicated in oral candidiasis. Furthermore, the synergistic action of betel leaf and nutmeg extracts enhances their antimicrobial potential, making them promising candidates for oral care formulations. The incorporation of these herbal ingredients into mouthwash formulations offers a natural alternative to conventional mouthwashes, potentially reducing the risk of antimicrobial resistance and adverse effects associated with synthetic antimicrobials. Moreover, the inclusion of betel leaf and nutmeg in mouthwash formulations may provide additional benefits such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, contributing to overall oral health and hygiene. This review underscores the importance of further research to elucidate the optimal formulations and concentrations of betel leaf and nutmeg extracts for maximum efficacy and safety in herbal mouthwashes. Additionally, clinical studies are warranted to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of these herbal mouthwashes in promoting oral health and preventing oral diseases.
