Abstract

In order to assess the anthropogenic impact on the Mbankomo, Nkozoa and Ayene marshes in the Central Region, a physicochemical analysis, coupled with macroinvertebrate analysis, was carried out from September 2022 to April 2023. Samples were taken on a seasonal basis. Physicochemical analyzes revealed that the waters studied had low oxygen content (16.05 ± 7.77%), very low mineral content, with low values for conductivity (214.62 ± 33.01 µs/cm) and oxidizability (44.60 ± 16.07), and high orthophosphate values (244.11 ± 146 mg/L), indicating that the water quality in the Mbankomo, Nkozoa and Ayene marshes is poor. A total of 1,359 macroinvertebrates were identified, divided into 26 families. The Standardized Global Biotic Index (SGBI) reveals waters disturbed by anthropogenic activities and therefore of very poor ecological quality. The results and discussion show that the best indicators of water quality in the Mbankomo, Nkozoa and Ayene swamps are aquatic macroinvertebrates, the vast majority of which are hexapods (chironomidae).
