EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF AUTOLOGOUS SERUM THERAPY(AST) IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC IDIOPATHIC URTICARIA : A PROSPECTIVE STUDY IN A TERTIARY CARE CENTRE

ABSTRACT—BACKGROUND: Urticaria ,characterized by rapid appearance of pruritic,erythematous,wheals triggered by many factors such as infections,allergy to foods or food additives,anxiety, and autoantibody production against IgE receptor causing liberation of vasoactive substances.Autologous Serum Therapy (AST) is an useful adjunct to anti histamines for the treatment of chronic resistant urticaria.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:To study effectiveness and safety of AST in chronic idiopathic urticaria patients.MATERIALS AND METHODS:This was a hospital based prospective study evaluating the efficacy and safety of AST in 30 chronic idiopathic urticaria patients with typical signs and symptoms at outpatient department of DVL ,Santhiram Medical College and General hospital,Nandyal,Andhra Pradesh. In this study 30 patients were given intramuscular injection of autologous serum at gluteus muscle every month for 6 months .RESULTS: Among total 30 patients (n=30) who were assessed by Urticaria Activiy Score (UAS) after AST sessions 18 patients (60%) had absence of urticaria, 9 patients (30%) had well controlled urticaria , 3 patients (10%) had mild urticaria.CONCLUSION:There was significant response with promising results and no side effects after Autologous Serum Therapy in chronic idiopathic urticaria patients.
