Abstract

Fatigue is a far-reaching symptom and a subjective experience, thus making it difficult to define it. In literature, it is defined as “extreme and persistent tiredness, weakness or exhaustion either mental, physical or both” [Dittner et al 2004]. Fatigue at work is a normal daily experience. Work Engagement as defined by Schaufeli et al. (2001), is a positive, affective-motivational state of fulfilment that is characterised by vigour, dedication, and absorption. Critical long-term fatigue is linked to absenteeism and work dysfunction. The concept of job-related welfare is made up of both, being in a positive state, such as work engagement and also being low in negative states, such as the experience of fatigue. The study aimed to determine the influence of work fatigue on work engagement among young adults working in the service sector. The data was collected from 116 young Indian males and females between the age group 20-40 years working in the service sector using the Checklist Individual Strength Questionnaire and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9). A quantitative non-experimental factorial research design was planned, wherein two-way ANOVA analysis was used to determine if there is an interaction between the two independent variables, ie. Gender and Work Fatigue on Work Engagement. The findings indicated that the level of work fatigue significantly influenced employees' work engagement. However, there is no significant gender influence on work engagement. Further, the study also explored the effect of the interaction between gender and levels of work fatigue on employees' work engagement. It was concluded that there was no significant interaction effect influencing the employees’ work engagement.
