Abstract: Human personality exhibits incredible complexity and cannot be adequately described by a single attribute. Understanding how personality traits relate to individual differences is a significant challenge. This article delves into personality development through the lens of Indian philosophical doctrines, specifically panchmahabhuta, panchkosha, triguna, and tridosha. Utilizing a qualitative research design, this retrospective study systematically collected and analyzed relevant literature from traditional texts of both orthodox and heterodox schools of ancient India. The findings reveal a spectrum of perspectives on human personality development. The panchkosha vyaktitva vikas theory elucidates personality development through five layers: annamaya kosha, pranamaya kosha, manomaya kosha, vijayamaya kosha, and anandamaya kosha. The tridosha and trigunas theories highlight how the panchmahabhuta (five great elements) influence personality through bodily fluids (vata, pitta, and kapha) and the three gunas (sattva, rajas, and tamas), respectively. It is evident that every individual possesses all three gunas and doshas, but varying degrees of these elements result in different personality types and individual differences in psycho-cognitive and physio-biological characteristics. The study concludes by exploring the implications of panchmahabhuta and its associated elements for the holistic development of human personality, addressing physical, mental, intellectual, social, moral, and spiritual dimensions.
