A descriptive survey was conducted to assess the support provided by the care givers for common complications among quadriplegic patients of selected hospitals, Kolkata, West Bengal. The objectives were to find out the common complications present among quadriplegic patients, to assess support provided by the care givers for the common complications, to find out the association between supports provided by the care givers and selected demographic factors. The conceptual framework used in study is the Dorothea Orem’s Self Care Deficit Theory. Non probability convenience sampling technique was followed to select 60 patients as the sample of the study. Structured interview schedule and record analysis Performa were used to collect data. The study finding revealed that maximum 35% patients belonged to 28-37 years of age group, majority75% of the patients were male, most of the patients’ 52% neurological level of injury was incomplete. 41.66% patients had respiratory problems, 78.33% had pressure sores and all of them had bowel problems, bladder problems and mobility and transfer problems. Most of the care givers 33.33% are brothers of the patients and 73.33% care givers are male, majority 36.66% of their educational qualification was higher secondary, most of them had no previous experience of caring quadriplegic patients. 48% of the care givers are giving moderate support for respiratory problems of patients, 40.42% giving poor support for pressure sore problems, 53.33% giving moderate support for bowel problems, 67.74% giving poor support for bladder problems and 45% providing poor support for mobility and transfer problems. Significant associations were found between the presence of complications and neurological level of injury and between the previous experience of the care givers andsupport provided for selected problems.
