PSA levels, Gleason scoring, Benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Three pathological processes affect the prostate gland: inflammation, benign nodular enlargement & tumors. PSA levels is used to assist with the diagnosis & management of prostatic pathology. Prostate cancer is graded using Gleason system. AIMS & OBJECTIVES: To determine the spectrum, clinical findings and PSA levels of pathological lesions in prostate biopsy and to evaluate microscopic anatomy of lesions along with Gleason scoring. MATERIAL & METHODS: This was an Observational study which included total 144 prostate biopsies. A retrospective prostatic biopsy samples were taken out, detailed history of every patient with presenting clinical features & PSA obtained from the records. The section were examined microscopically. DISCUSSION: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common pathology, Commonest Gleason score in prostatic adenocarcinoma was score 8 & Commonest group grading of group IV. Increased frequency of micturition was the commonest symptom. PSA is specific for prostatic tissue and is raised in all lesions of prostate. This is similar to the studies of Bhat S et al, Patel SK et al. CONCLUSION: PSA cannot be regarded as 100% accurate screening tool for individual’s risk for prostatic carcinoma.
