Abstract

Background: Menstruation is a phenomenon unique to females universally and is poorly understood. It is characterized by cyclical fluctuations in the levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), estrogen and progesterone which affects a number of physiological and biochemical processes. However, extensive literature review found scanty reports on the changes in the levels of serum calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and chloride during menstruation and 5 days after menstruation. Methods: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of menstruation on serum electrolyte levels among 40 consented female students of National Polytechnic University Institute (NPUI), Bamenda, using a cross sectional study design. Socio-demographics were collected using a semi-structured pretested questionnaire. Venous blood was then drawn from the arm using a sterile needle and 5ml syringe for serum electrolyte measurements in a plain tube. Analysis was done using the Semi-automated SinoThinker spectrophotometer (SK3002B1) at the Standard Medical Diagnostic Center Mile 3 Nkwen. Data collected was inputted into Microsoft excel, exported to SPSS version 21 and inferential statistics was computed using the Chi square analysis and paired sample t test. Statistical significance was considered if P value was less than 0.05. Results: There were statistically significant changes in serum calcium and magnesium levels during menstruation (P≤ 0.05). Serum magnesium, potassium and chloride values were normal 5 days after menstruation while there was an observed hyponatremia throughout the 5 days after menstruation. It was found that there existed a statistically significant (P≤ 0.05) relationship between menstruation status and serum electrolyte levels which cannot be explained on the basis of biochemical changes alone. Conclusion: It was therefore concluded that this relationship mainly resulted from the changes in hormonal levels during different phases of the menstrual cycle.
