Impact of Non-Performing Assets on the Performance of Public and Private Sector Banks in India

Non-performing Assets is a major concern for the Indian Banking Industry in the present times. It has adversely affected the profitability position of the banks. In India, both Public and Private Sector Banks are affected by the problem of increasing Non-Performing Assets. The present study analyzes the Non-Performing Assets of selected public and private sector banks with the help of Gross Non-Performing Assets and Net Non-Performing Assets Ratios. The level of Non-Performing Assets ratios have been compared for the selected banks. Further, the impact of Non-Performing Assets on the profitability of such banks has also been analyzed. Various statistical tools have been used to analyze the data of banks. The analysis reveals that the Non-performing Assets have been increasing in the Indian banks. But public sector banks have been affected more than the private banks. There is a need to take adequate steps to slow down the level of Non-Performing Assets in the public sector banks.
