Diversity and inclusion have been part of the Tata ethos since its inception. A letter from Jamsetji to his son sir Dorabji Tata had outlined his vision for a township for Tata employees, which eventually became Jamshedpur. It states the plan must “earmark areas for Hindu temple, Mohammedan mosques and Christian churches”. Tata Group encourages and nurtures all forms of diversity. They respect differences that are fundamental to an individual’s identity such as age, gender, ethnicity, race, physical ability, mental ability, sexual orientation as well as latent and invisible differences that shape our perspectives like, education, work experience, parental status, etc. They promote themselves as an equal opportunity employer, maintaining dignity and respect for all. As a group, Tatas have intrinsically believed in the power of diversity and inclusion. The Tata values of ‘understanding’ and ‘unity’ espouse the spirit of inclusion. The Tata Code of Conduct, enshrined under the leadership of Ratan Tata, also underlines the belief in diversity and inclusion. The case study I intend on undertaking delves into the ways in which Tatas implemented diversity and inclusion across their various businesses. I would also like to go through some cases of diversity and inclusion in Tatas to make it easier to understand. We would also visit the benefits Tatas reaped through their various diversity and inclusion programs.
