Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of salivary substitutes in type II diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: The randomized, a single-blinded study conducted at the institutionalized old age homes in Karnataka. Participants aged >35 years old with type II diabetes mellitus were recruited. Dry mouth conditions were assessed using CODS Index at baseline. The salivary flow rate and pH was assessed. To compare the salivary flowrate and pH in xerostomia among type II diabetic patients - Wilcoxon-signed rank test was used. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Result: The mean (±Standard Deviation) salivary flowrate level has increased from 0.17± 0.078 at baseline to 0.41±0.166 at end of 21st day. So, the weekly comparison between baseline and final evaluation showed statistically significant difference in salivary flowrate (p < 0.001) Conclusion: Dry mouth is a persistent problem in many clinical settings, and clinical trials should evaluate how well treatments diminish xerostomia as well as their effects on patients' quality of life who have long-term, chronic dry mouth symptoms.
