Police investigation is a part of criminal procedure which is provided under criminal procedure code (CrPC).sections 154 to 176 CrPC deal with Investigation by police and their powers and duties .After receiving and recording first information, the criminal investigation starts. Steps in investigation: 1.Proceeding to the place of offence. 2.Ascertainment of facts and circumstances. 3.Tracing and arrest of suspected offender. 4.Collection of evidence. 5.Examination of witnesses and recording their statements. 6.Search of places and seizure of material objects. 7.Formation of opinion whether on the material collected there is a case to place the accused before the magistrate for trail and file charge sheet u/s 173. 8.Once investigation closes, trail begins. Filing charge sheet. [sec 173] 9.Taking cognizance of offence.[sec 190 and 193] 10.Isuue of process for trail. [sec 204] Thus , investigation of crime is very crucial and burdensome. The investigating officers have to apply all the rules and see the investigation is not conducted in an arbitrary manner and in violation of established principles including the principles of natural justice.
