The Indian agriculture sector accounts for around 42% of the total workforce but the contribution towards the GDP accounts only 19 to 20%. The per capita income of the farmers is still not up to the mark and leaves a lot of scope to increase the income and living standards of the farmer. GoI has set a target of doubling the farmer income by the year 2022 and forming Farmer producer companies is one of the important ways to achieve it. FPOs can be more useful for small and marginal farmers which account for more than 86% of total farmers in India. This research is based on a telephonic survey conducted among the seven FPCs in Uttar Pradesh to understand the effectiveness of grants. Results indicated that many FPCs benefited from the startup grants in their initial phase with an average amount ranging from Rs. 4,00,000 to 4,50,000. About 10 to 30% of women are members and mere 16.6% women are directors in the FPCs. None of the FPCs are using any marketing promotion method to increase their products reach. Mostly 80% sales of the FPCs are at the local level. The high transportation cost was reported as the main reason for not taking the products to distant areas. It is also found that time consuming and tedious processes in getting financial assistance are the biggest problems faced by the FPCs in taking grants from the government. The research concludes that it is necessary to provide training on quality production and sales promotions which improve the FPC’s marketing and government has to provide the grant on time and also simplifying the banking procedures are considered as need of the hour.
