Abstract

In this study, the effect of VAM on the growth of maize and the uptake of some heavy metals by the plant were studied. Maize roots were inoculated with VAM fungus and sludge, and the rate of infection on the roots was determined. Heavy metals contents increased in soil, root, and leaves, depending on the increased doses of Cr, Fe, Cd, Zn, and Cu, being applied to both inoculated and non-inoculated treatments. The inoculation of VAM along with sludge decreased the translocation of chromium from root to aerial portion through chelation of the metal with the cells .The decrease in the translocation of chromium from root to aerial parts was observed only in black Soil.
