This experimental investigation evaluates the effects of hydrogen enrichment on karanja biodiesel blend with the help of ethanol as catalyst to find emission and performance characteristics. With the induction of hydrogen along with biodiesel and ethanol, brake power improved prominently and decreased brake specific fuel consumption. All the blends with catalyst showed decreased CO2, CO and HC emissions as compared with the blends without catalyst. The blends without ethanol showed higher HC and CO emissions as compared with pure diesel in CI engine. The NOx emissions increased with the addition of catalyst in the biodiesel blend. However, this experimental investigation reveals that with the use of ethanol as catalyst along with hydrogen in biodiesel blend the exhaust emissions showed improved results as compared with the blends without catalyst and that of pure diesel. All the test results significantly improved with increase in the percentage of catalyst in biodiesel. Therefore the present paper provides a strong platform to continue further investigation on using biodiesel fuel in a diesel engine with variety of fuel catalyst under varying engine operating parameters.
