Abstract: Wireless communication refers to the transmission of information or data over a distance without the need for physical connections such as wires or cables. It enables the exchange of information between devices or systems using electromagnetic waves, allowing for flexible and convenient communication. Wireless communication has become an integral part of our daily lives, powering various technologies such as smartphones, Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, and more. It offers numerous benefits, including mobility, flexibility, and scalability. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, enabling us to connect and share information effortlessly across different locations. Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Network (HSTN) plays a pivotal role in wireless communication by combining the capabilities of satellite and terrestrial networks. It extends coverage to remote areas, ensures reliable connectivity, offers scalability and flexibility, enables high-speed data transmission, enhances disaster resilience, and provides global connectivity. HSTN optimizes resource allocation, addresses limitations of individual networks, and bridges the digital divide, resulting in comprehensive wireless communication solutions in diverse scenarios. In this review paper, we have focused on system architecture, performance analysis, design optimization, and secure communication schemes for different cooperative and cognitive HSTN network architectures. Different key technologies are compared. Based on this comparison, several open issues for future research are discussed.
