Abstract:
‘The Rape of the Lock’ is a mock-heroic narrative poem written by Alexander Pope. It is One of the best examples of high burlesque, it was first published anonymously in Lintot’s Miscellaneous poems and translated on May 1712 in two cantos and 334 Lines. A revised edition was written by Pope followed in March 1714 as a five-canto version in 794 lines accompanied by six engravings. The final from of the poem appeared in 1717 with the addition of ‘Clarissa’ speech on good humour. The poem was much translated and contributed to the growing popularity of mock-heroic in Europe. ‘The Rape of the Lock’ is important because it is an excellent example of well written Satire. It focuses on themes that are important to society even today, such as obsession with physical appearance and exaggeration of trivial matters. In the poem Pope manages to be critical of society, humorous in his satire, and tragic in his telling all at the same time. There are many ways by which Pope’s this epic masterpiece have been showcased, through drama, paintings and art. This paper particularly attempts to discuss the ekphrastic narration of The Rape of the Lock.
