Portal hypertension is the most common condition affecting the portal venous system in chronic liver disease. The increase in resistance to portal and splanchnic blood flow contributes to the development of portal hypertension which is a syndrome of various etiologies, ill defined pathogenesis, hemodynamic alterations and frequent complications.
