Literacy is considered as the main driving force of development for a nation. It is a key for socio-economic progress. ‘Education for all’ is one of the important tasks that carried out by the Government of India but still we have the lowest female literacy rate in Asia. As per UN report, education for women is the single most effective way to improve lives and health of a family and a society at large. A woman with education is a powerful person, she has the power to educate the children in her family, guide them in taking decisions, contribute economically and offer valuable inputs for improvement on home and society. The Indian literacy rate has grown to 74.04% (2011) from 12% at the end of British rule in 1947. Although this was a greater than six fold improvement. The 2011 census, however, indicated a 2001–2011 decadal literacy growth of 9.2%, which is slower than the growth seen during the previous decade. Gender discrimination still persists in India and lot more needs to be done in the field of women education in India. There is a wide gender disparity in the literacy rate in India, effective literacy rates (age 7 and above) in 2011 were 82.14% for male and 65.46% for female, whereas female literacy rate of West Bengal is comparatively high (71.16%). In this context the present study is an attempt to highlight the growth of female literacy in West Bengal in comparison to India.
