Abstract

Abstract: Sustainable development plays a vital role in shaping both urban and rural areas, ensuring environmental preservation while addressing economic and social needs. This study, conducted among 150 respondents from Coimbatore District, examines sustainability awareness and practices, comparing urban and rural engagement in waste management, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable mobility. Using Google Forms, primary data was collected across different demographic groups to understand existing trends and challenges. Findings indicate that urban areas exhibit higher engagement in sustainability initiatives, with 83.3% practicing waste segregation and 44.4% preferring walking for short distances. However, despite Coimbatore’s Smart City status, solar energy adoption remains notably low (5.6% in urban areas and 24% in rural regions). Semi-urban areas report the highest bicycle usage (33.3%), reflecting a positive shift towards green mobility, while rural respondents show the highest willingness to transition to electric vehicles (60%), though limited infrastructure remains a barrier. Alarmingly, sustainability awareness is lowest in semi-urban areas (66.7% unaware), underscoring the need for targeted education and policy interventions. The study also evaluates the role of the Coimbatore District Administration in promoting sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Viksit Bharat objectives. The study recommends expanding renewable energy adoption, strengthening waste management systems, enhancing sustainability education programs, and increasing investment in electric vehicle infrastructure. By bridging urban-rural disparities and reinforcing policy measures, Coimbatore can progress towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible district, aligning with India’s SDG commitments and the Viksit Bharat vision.
