Abstract

Edible vaccines are novel approach to immunization where antigenic proteins to elicit immune response upon consumption are expressed in genetically modified plants. Economic, logistical and public health implications of edible vaccines as a viable alternative to conventional immunization methods are reviewed in this article. The production costs of these vaccines are less, they are simpler to distribute, needle-free administration of these vaccines can be carried out and these vaccines can be used for extensive immunization in areas with scarce resources. But we still have to come along the way to standardize the dosage of antibiotics to be dispersed, how to make sure it’s safe over the long term, minimizing environmental effects, and of course, navigating regulatory barriers. Comparative cost analyses show that plant based vaccines could be produced ten to fifty times cheaper than using traditional methods, and may also be the most cost effective option for reducing the cold chain costs involved (up to 80%). Given significant public concern about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), proper education and policy strategies could help improve acceptance of GMOs. Investigations are needed further to optimise antigen expression, increase dosage uniformity and establish safe profiles. The success of edible vaccines has the capacity to revolutionize immunization in the world, and most importantly in developing regions, through not only significantly increasing accessibility and reducing costs, but giving a fair shot of the great healthcare that developed countries enjoy.
