Introduction: Periodontal disease is an important cause of tooth loss in adults. The screening of periodontitis at the epidemiological level is essential to prevent the progression of disease. A periodontitis case should be defined using the staging and grading system proposed in the 2017 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. However, due to the numerous periodontal conditions and clinical parameters thresholds, it is difficult to completely implement by memory, especially by dental students, and provide consistent and accurate results.
Objective: The objective of this study was to develop and test the implementation of a mobile application for periodontal diagnosis.
Methodology: A mobile application for Android was developed based on the Classification of Periodontal Diseases, 2017. 8 postgraduate students were asked to determine the diagnosis of 16 clinical cases. Each student was assigned 2 cases, one using manual method and one using the GumGuru mobile application. The results were compared for accuracy and efficiency.
Results: The smartphone application demonstrated more efficiency than manual method. However, the diagnoses according to the app were found to be less accurate by the students.
Conclusion: This study indicates that there is scope for incorporation of evolving technology which can improve periodontal diagnosis in the dental academic setting.
