Abstract

BACKGROUND:There are very few evidence-based therapy options for non~specific persistent neck pain, which is a substantial public health issue. Weakness in the serratus anterior, middle trapezius, and lower trapezius muscles results in persistent neck pain and impairs an individual's functional capacity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of lower trapezius, middle trapezius and serratus anterior muscles strengthening exercises on pain, muscle strength and functional status in non-specific chronic neck pain. STUDY DESIGN: Case study STUDY SETTING: Co-operative Institute of Health Sciences, Thalassery, Kannur. METHOD: Study conducted on an individual selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patient undergoes baseline measurement with MMT,NPRS and NDI. The patient was instructed to do specific strengthening exercises for middle trapezius, lower trapezius and serratus anterior muscles for 3 days per week for 4 weeks. The treatment session consists of 3 types of exercises and each exercise with 15 repetitions and a total 15 minute duration, one minute of rest time was given. In the first week of treatment the strengthening exercises started with half kg weight and then every week weight was increased by half kg for next 3 weeks. Pre-test and post-test evaluation was done before and after the treatment procedures. OUTCOME MEASURES: Manual muscle test, Numeric pain rating scale, Neck disability index. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that strengthening exercises for lower trapezius, middle trapezius and serratus anterior muscles have a significant effect on improving muscle strength and functional status and in reducing pain.
