Concern for ‘Here and Now’: Gieve Patel’s Mirrored, Mirroring
environmental awareness and issues, communion, pollution, deforestation, spiritual solace
The present paper is an attempt to explore the environmental awareness as reflected in Gieve Patel’s Mirrored, Mirroring (1991). In the introduction written to Nissim Ezekiel’s Collected Poems: 1952-1988, Gieve Patel argues that Ezekiel tries to overcome his loneliness by ‘throwing himself into what’s around him: India, Bombay more specifically, the here and now’. Patel, too, makes a similar attempt in his poems included Poems (1966), How Do You Withstand, Body (1976) and especially, in his post-1980 collection of poetry, Mirrored, Mirroring. Although, in this collection, Patel turns to God and becomes spiritual, he does not lose his communion with the world around him (here) and the present time in which he lives (now). The post-1980 world is haunted by environmental crises. Such critical issues as global warming, pollution of air, water and sound, different types of wastes, deforestation, extinction of species etc. have left their deep impact on the sensitive minds. A careful reading of different poems included in Patel’s Mirrored, Mirroring reveals how the poet addresses various burning environmental issues and shows the need to derive the spiritual solace without losing connection with the nonhuman world.
