Abstract
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a flagship social security initiative aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods through guaranteed wage employment. This study examines the impact of MGNREGA on rural development in Bihar, with a specific focus on Bakhri Block, Begusarai district, from a geographical perspective. The research integrates primary data from a survey of 500 households with secondary census data to assess income changes, employment patterns, and asset creation. A comparative analysis of pre- and post-MGNREGA income levels, supported by statistical methods including the Z-test, reveals a significant increase in average monthly earnings from ₹2950 to ₹5920, demonstrating MGNREGA’s role in improving financial stability and reducing rural income disparities. Additionally, findings indicate a diversification of investments, with notable growth in livestock rearing, small-scale entrepreneurship, and water resource management. The study also highlights persisting challenges, including administrative inefficiencies and wage payment delays, which hinder the scheme’s full potential. By offering a geographical assessment of MGNREGA’s implementation, this research contributes to policy discussions on enhancing its effectiveness. The study underscores the need for governance reforms and infrastructural improvements to maximize the program’s socio-economic benefits.
