The 21st century’s growing energy demand, fueled by
urbanization, industrialization, and population growth,
underscores the need for sustainable and innovative
energy solutions. Traditional energy sources, such as
fossil fuels, significantly contribute due to greenhouse
gas emissions, environmental degradation occurs
emissions, pollution, and resource depletion.
Technologies such as solar energy provide renewable
solutions, wind, and hydropower offer viable
alternatives but face scalability and geographic
challenges. This project proposes a novel a system for
harvesting energy that makes use of piezoelectric
sensors to convert the kinetic energy generated by
vehicular movement into electrical power. When
vehicles traverse roads, mechanical stress applied to
these sensors produces electricity, which can be used
to power streetlights, traffic signals, and EV charging
stations. For instance, a single car passing over a speed
breaker can generate 5–40 volts of electricity,
depending on its weight and speed. In high-traffic
areas, this technology presents a promising, eco-
friendly approach to reducing grid dependency,
addressing energy poverty, and enhancing urban
infrastructure sustainability.
