ROLE OF MRI IN EVALUATION OF ADNEXAL LESIONS
Keywords: MRI, Adnexal Lesions, O-RADS MRI
Abstract
Background: Adnexal lesions are frequently encountered in female patients, spanning a wide spectrum from benign cysts to malignant neoplasms. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in evaluating these lesions, particularly when ultrasound findings are inconclusive. The introduction of the Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System (O-RADS MRI) has further standardized the assessment and risk stratification of adnexal masses, aiding in clinical decision-making.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Radiodiagnosis, Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences, Loni, over one year. Fifty female patients with adnexal masses detected on ultrasound underwent MRI pelvis scans using a 3 Tesla Philips IngeniaElition-X machine. O-RADS MRI scores were assigned, and findings were correlated with histopathological outcomes where available. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.
Results: O-RADS III lesions were most common (64%), and 56% of cases were managed conservatively. Malignancy was confirmed in 8% of cases. MRI, combined with O-RADS scoring, showed excellent accuracy in characterizing adnexal lesions and guiding management.
Conclusion: MRI, along with O-RADS MRI, provides a reliable, standardized approach for evaluating adnexal lesions, enhancing diagnostic confidence and optimizing patient care.
