Abstract

For the chemical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at room temperature, we have designed, built and characterized surface acoustic waves (SAWs) sensors coated with either single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) or multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In order to create the SAW sensors designed as 433.92MHz two-port resonator-based oscillators, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were sprayed onto STX-quartz substrates coated with SiO2 sheets. The resonant frequency of the SAW oscillating sensor shows a high downshift of a few hundreds (a few tens) of kHz for SWCNTs (MWCNTs) films distributed into solvent of ethanol with individual exposure to tested VOCs such as ethanol, ethylacetate and toluene in nitrogen. At ambient temperature, carbon nanotube-coated SAW sensors have demonstrated high sensitivity. The kind of organic solvent utilized to distribute the carbon nanotubes as sensing materials over SAW sensors can regulate the selectivity to the VOCs being tested. Initially, a few sensing techniques between the carbon nanotubes and the chemical species to be identified will be covered.
