Abstract : Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, causing vision impairment and blindness. This review provides a comprehensive overview of DR, including its pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, treatment options, and emerging therapeutic strategies. DR's pathophysiology involves hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress and inflammation, while risk factors include duration of diabetes, glycemic control, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Diagnostic approaches comprise fundus imaging, optical coherence tomography, and ultrasound biomicroscopy. Current treatments, such as laser photocoagulation and anti-VEGF therapy, are effective, while emerging therapies, including gene therapy and stem cell therapy, hold promise. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent vision loss, and further research is needed to develop more effective and targeted therapeutic strategies.
