Biosurfactants are surface-active biomolecules produced by micro-organisms having wide range of applications and have attracted wide interest unique properties like specificity low toxicity and relative ease of preparation in the past decade. The present study aims to produce and characterize biosurfactants produced mainly from bacterial species isolated from different polyaromatic hydrocarbon polluted soil. Biosurfactant production was carried out by using 20 different bacterial cultures which were inoculated in 20 different flasks wherein Bushnell Haas broth was taken as the nutrient media supplemented with hydrocarbon as sole source of carbon the experimental study also focused on characterization for the obtained biosurfactants by several tests like phenol sulfuric acid, lipid test, orcinol test , biuret test, oil spreading assay, FTIR, emulsification index, surface tension determination, were performed for the extracted biosurfactants and the results showed all of the biosurfactants were glycolipids in nature and exhibited good emulsification activity along with promising results for higher product formation and reduction in surface tension. Bioremediation, detergent industries, soaps, food beverage and pharmaceutical industries are the arena for application of biosurfactants.
