Water Quality Testing of Uri River water at Barkheda Dam (Bel Baba Dam, Gandhwani) District–Dhar Madhya Pradesh, India

The Barkheda Dam is a medium-sized dam built under the Belbaba project of the Madhya Pradesh government, located near the village of Barkheda on the Uri River in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, India, approximately 6 km away from Dehri and Longsari in the Bagvikaskhand block. This dam is primarily used to provide water for agricultural purposes and drinking water in the surrounding areas, especially during the Rabi season, and is known for its potential to significantly impact the local farming community by regulating water supply for crop irrigation in the rural areas of Kukshi tehsil. This project benefits approximately 9,900 hectares of land in 37 villages, and local people also engage in fishing activities, which strengthens their economic and social status. On the eastern part of the dam, there is an ancient worship site known as Belbaba, which is a centre of faith for the tribes of various villages in Kukshi and Manawar tehsils. It is believed that worshipping here prevents any kind of disease in livestock, which is why farmers from different villages come here to worship after sowing their crops every year. To study the physical and chemical quality of the dam's water, samples were taken from various locations of the dam. The international standard methods, i.e., APHA and BIS, were used for sampling, preserving, and treating the water samples. After sampling, tests were conducted for pH, TDS, Chloride, Sulphate, Nitrate, Fluoride, Temperature, Alkalinity, DO, COD, and BOD.
