The automotive industry is undergoing a major transition towards sustainable transportation aiming for reduction of carbon emission, featuring Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs). The purpose of this study is to understand the need to pivot for development of EVs and HFCVs. A comprehensive study has been made in terms of powertrain configuration, technical aspects, economical aspects, operational aspects and environmental aspects. By employing a comparative framework, this study aims to inform for the implication of each technology for future car design. This study also highlights the strengths and weaknesses EVs and HFCVs, hence a feasible design configuration and development of next generation vehicles for future automotive industry is found through this comparative study.
